A Blood sport of Roosters

The cockfighting is the special attraction on the auspicious days of Sankranti festival in Andhra Pradesh. The festival also called as Makara sankramanam. The three days of Sankranti festival are considered as so special ones.Usually it falls in  January  month (12-14).First day is called Bhogi.People bathe with the water in which plum fruits laid ..!Second day is Sankranti.Main festival.Third day is Kanumu which is so special for livestock.

As harvest came to the houses of  farmers, the celebrations would unleash in its full swing.Cockfighting is the key feature in it.This tradition had been coming from some hundreds of years. It was cited in the Kavyas of  historical poet Srinadha.Nowadays, the fighting between cocks are not done openly. There are several restrictions from the side of Government.

So don't think that it was curbed completely. In many districts of Andhra pradesh the tradition is going on without any interruption. But in the interior  places. Those who are interested in participating in cockfighting would feed their cocks with utmost care. The process runs all through the year.

Bettings are done on a large scale. This time it went 5 crore to 15 crore rupees.East Godavari,West Godavari districts are famous very famous for these although there are other places to note.Even some politicians would also give helping hand.So everything goes smoothly. In the fray, the cocks keep fighting fiercely until one get killed.every cock is tied with razor sharp blade to it's leg,so some times the fight will finish within some minutes.Sometimes within seconds too.

Both the winner and loser get in to pieces for preparing a spicy curry.Interestingly, the winner cock will be given to the highest bidder in the auction.
